You can book your theory test up to 3 months before your 17th birthday but you must have already received your provisional licence in order to book (see "Where to Start" tab for help applying).
The test consists of 50 multiple choice questions and the hazard perception test.
The multiple choice questions cover all aspects of driving from road safety, dealing with accidents, road signs and markings. There are 4 potential answers to each question although sometimes the candidate may be asked to select more than one answer from a list so it is very important to read each question carefully. The pass mark for this area is 43/50.
The hazard perception part of the test follows on directly after completing the multiple choice and consists of 14 short video clips. These aim to check the candidates ability to acknowledge potential dangers on the road ahead before they develop. Some hazards would then require the driver to take further action.
By clicking the mouse button (it does not have to be pointing anywhere specific) as soon as hazards are seen will result in the the highest 5 points score. The longer taken to click the button will result in less points scored until 0 is given if the hazards are missed completely. These clips can range from country roads, houseing estates, town driving, dual carriageways etc. Hazards can come in any shape or form from cyclists, children playing, vehicles reversing or emerging infront of you, delivery vehicles unloading, breakdowns ahead, pedestrian crossings etc.
Each clip contains many hazards but only one that develops into a situation where the driver would need to take further action. These are the hazards where you score the points. As you never know which hazard this will be, it is important to acknowledge and click for all other potential problems aswell. 1 of the 14 video clips also contains 2 point scoring hazards.
You will receive the results as soon as you complete the full test.
There is no real need to do the theory test before starting your driving lessons but you MUST have passed your theory test before you are able to book the practical test.
To book your theory you will need your provisional driving licence and a credit or debit card. The fee is currently £31 and there is rarely more than around 10 - 15 days waiting time for this test. You can arrange by calling or booking online.
